Lest We Forget

Meron has a morning ritual when she wakes up and she is pretty particular about it. She likes to be swung up so she can swat the jingly hanging stuffed thingies on the fan. She absolutely loves to go over and stare at the awesome painting our friend Laura did of her name. I spell it out - I point to the flower and dragon fly - and she gets undeniably giddy.

Then one morning she did something that stopped me in my tracks. On no prodding from me - she gave the biggest wave and smile to Brighton's picture that sits high over her room - kinda keeping watch.

I'm not gonna lie - it got me. Anyone who has seen Meron wave using all her fingers and smile with her whole face knows it's pretty cute but she was smiling at Brighton like I hadn't seen her do before. Like she knew him.

It gripped my heart man. It choked my throat. It brought a bunch of memories crushing back in - and I absolutely loved it. Waving to Brighton is now part of the morning ritual. As is explaining that they share the same middle name. I think she likes that.

Meron will know Brighton and everything about him. She has a brother. We have a son. The circumstances of our family aren't the norm - and we wouldn't have it any other way.

That is incredibly sweet. I know Brighton must love his sister andbe so honored by her morning ritual.
