Meron loves to do it. And we love to do it. I can't tell you how much I hope this stays with her in her life - the idea of running on the trails or completing a race with her is so cool to me!

To Do Justly, To Love Mercy...

I was following Laura and Meron home the other night and when I got out of the car Laura was getting out of theirs and she was crying. Not sad tears I could tell - just the kind that come when something happens that kinda pinches your heart.

She said "I can't help it... not when our daughter is sitting behind me singing these words:

'To do justly, to love mercy;
To walk humbly with our God..."
I love it. I love that Meron loves to sing these songs. If you ask her who they're singing to on the Compassion Art CD, she'll tell you "God." I love that too.

And I love that it's so normal to her yet it brings her mommy and daddy to tears. See - mommy and daddy know how the world can take that sweet innocence away. But for her, right now - it's so normal to just sing these words to God.

Our prayer is that her heart never, ever hardens to hearing and singing the words of God...

Yep - it's one of her new favorite things.

And even though it's messy, gets all over the place and is hard to clean up - truth is... it's one of my favorites too!

The King Is Enthralled By Your Beauty

"Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear:
Forget your people and your father's house.
The king is enthralled by your beauty;
honor him, for he is your lord."
- Psalm 45:10-11
Make sure the princesses in your life know this!

Don't You Smile!

She didn't wanna smile AT ALL for the camera.

Until I told her NOT TO smile...

Works every time!

A Little Bit of Goofy DNA

There is no doubt in my mind that when God made Meron he took a small piece of the goofy DNA he used throughout Camp Hoffman and wrapped it up in her - ready to surface at the right time...

Well - it has surfaced.

The girl fits right in at our household. No doubt.

Here she is doing what we call "big eyes." She knows it cracks me up and has been known to be fake sleeping and when I go to wake her she'll flip over and hit me with big eyes before laughing maniacally.

Seriously... I love my family.

The Generous Hearts of Children

A couple months ago we heard from 6 year old Savannah's mom, Angie. Their family has adopted from Ethiopia (and are doing it again!) and it seemed that Savannah had been moved by it and wanted to do something. So what'd she do?

Oh, you know, just a little something like telling her friends:

"Forget my birthday presents - lets do a formula drive instead!"
And that's exactly what she and her friends did and they have donated it all to Brighton Their World!

Today we got the opportunity to meet up with this awesome family and hang out for a bit. Their passion and love for orphans is undeniable and we were blessed by all they have done to support us. Meron had an absolute blast and may have met her match in the "I WILL hug you!" department as Silas was one determined little guy!

Thank you so much Savannah for listening to your heart - you are saving lives!

A few of these pics were selfishly stolen from Angie - she takes great pics - go check her out!

She Loves Her Mommy

Meron loves, loves, LOVES her Mommy. It's so obvious when you get a chance to just watch them interact with each other.

Today I was getting ready to go running and I paused and watched the two of them - Laura had started cleaning the living room up and was attacking the two "toy drawers" we have that store some of Meron's stuff. It was adorable - Meron was doing pretty much every thing Laura was - she would watch her and then mimic it. It was precious.

I headed out the door with that visual in my head and a big smile on my face. I love watching Laura being the best mom in the world and Meron utterly adoring everything her mommy is doing.

A Day We Celebrate

Today is a day we celebrate at Camp Hoffman - one of the many anniversaries you end up with after going through the adoption process.

And no - we're not talking about the 30th anniversary of Pac Man - though it's pretty cool that we share that date with the little, yellow, bald, chompy mouth-head guy! And now daddy feels old!

No - the real celebration today is that 2 years ago, at 9:43 AM, we got an email saying that a judge in Ethiopia had stamped the paperwork and we had passed court.

We were officially Meron's parents!

I remember it like it was yesterday - calling up Laura and saying:

"Hello Meron's Mommy!"
And life hasn't been the same since!

Meron - you have been a joy, a blessing, and a constant daily reminder of the incredible God we serve!

This day will always be a day we look at with happiness in our hearts - the day an earthly judge confirmed what our heavenly father had decided from the start!

We love you!

These Eyes...

... have seen so much.
... have cried so much.
... have laughed so much.
... have learned so much.
... have taught so much.
... have stood for so much.

And on June 14, 2008 - when I looked in to them for the first time - I saw Jesus staring right back out at me.

Oh - and for the record - they also make it extremely hard to hand out effective discipline when you're a sucker like me!

Meron - we LOVE your eyes!

Boss Hog

Meron LOVES motorcycles - or as she calls them "mehicos" - which sounds very much like "Mexico" and still makes me chuckle. It's the one word she knows how to say but chooses to say it her own way.

Everything says "tough-girl" except the glasses Meron... might wanna work on those!

Come To The Water

Meron's got a new favorite tune in the car. David Crowder's "La La Song" is sooo yesterday.

Now it's "Come to the Water" from the CompassionArt CD. If I only had a penny for every time I've heard "Want come to the water daddy..."

excuse the dark video! It was spur of the moment...

"Come to the water, Come to the water,
Of life! It will never run dry..."

1 Year Out (well, almost 2)...

The great guys over at asked us to be part of their series on families who have been home at least a year. We were more than happy to join in! Below is our article.

Adoption is a roller coaster. International adoption takes the roller coaster and removes the handlebars and seatbelts and makes the hills bigger. Not only are you encouraged to let go and relinquish control – you HAVE to let go. There are no handlebars to hold on to.

Next month it will be 2 years since we first held Meron in our arms. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday and other times it feels like an eternity ago. Looking back over the last 2 years it is pretty cool to look at our journey with the 20/20 vision of hindsight and to see where we’ve come and how much we’ve grown.

A few things we’ve learned since coming home with Meron:

Papa's Yellow Roses

6 years ago Laura's Papa came down to our house to help us with some landscaping. One of his hobbies was gardening and his specialty was roses. So while he was here he ran circles around us in the yard and planted a bunch of rose bushes for us. We've enjoyed them since - some years with better blooms than others.

Earlier this year he was called home to be with his heavenly father. And though we miss him greatly - we find peace in knowing he is whole again and holding Brighton for us.

Laura recently shared with me that she had been talking to God and really praying for a good bloom this year from her Papa's roses. And right now - even though the rest of the yard is kinda hurting - there is quite a bit of yellow bursting forth from the bed her Papa prepared for us.

Thank you God - for knowing our hearts, knowing our minds and loving us so much that you actually care about the little details that we care about.

You Take Me To Your Football Game?

For a while now every single time we would pass any type of field (soccer, baseball, football, etc) Meron would say the same thing:

"Daddy! Your football game! You take me?"
We had been promising her that she and mommy would come out to one of the flag football games - and tonight she finally made it.

After some much-deserved time on the playground, she and mommy made their way to the bleachers. And trust me... I knew when she arrived! She was easily the most vocal fan I have heard at any sporting event... ever.

It started with:
"Let's Go Daddy!"
and then slowly turned into:
"Come on Daddy! Play your game!"
and then one of my favorites (when I came to the sideline):
"Here daddy - I get your water for you!"
After it was over she came sprinting into a crowd of guys she had never met and made her way to me to give me a gigantic hug. Best. Thing. Ever.

On the way home she said:
"Your game was really good. I had fun!"
It was easily the best game of the season for me and it had nothing to do with anything on the field (although we WERE the team with 32 points!).

Limber Legs

At what point in life do we stop just sitting like this? I mean - really? Just hanging out chilling in the squatty position.

For no other reason than... she can!

She Just Won't Listen

I've asked her a few times to stop growing up so fast... she refuses to listen. Her response is usually:

"I a big girl."
Holy cow she looks way too grown up here.

Happy Mother's Day

Words can't even express how amazing Laura is in the "mommy department." So I won't even try.

But know this... she owns it!

Happy Mothers Day to everybody out there being mom to kids!

Strawberry Fields Forever

Meron's Granny came in town this weekend and brought with her the idea of us all hitting a farm to pick some strawberries. Great idea Granny!

And though there aren't very many farms that are close to us - it was worth the drive! The berries were ridiculously good and it was priceless watching Meron light up as she pulled those strawberries off and alternated between eating them and putting them in the bucket.

Here's Meron enjoying the fruits of her labor - and she enjoyed it many times!

Thanks Granny for the fun idea! Can't wait for the next berry season!

You Brushing My Back?

Tonight mommy was taking Meron's hair down and when she started brushing it - Meron said:

"You brushing my back?"
No Meron - it's just THAT long! (its been growing like crazy)
