That's "Dapper Diaper Dude" right there...
And his crazy photo-bombing older sister.
Oh yeah - and Cider dog peering under his armpit.
Just another normal night at the crib...

Sometimes... ya have one of those nights where it feels like ALL you are doing is disciplining.
I mean - ya know it's needed - but man does it stink.
And sometimes - when ya choose to really sick to your guns - ya sneak back down after they are snoozing real hard and ya just look at them. And pray over 'em. And kiss 'em goodnight... again.
And sometimes ya leave 'em a note at their breakfast spot - asking them and their brother and sister on a "movie night date" the next night.
Raisinets and all...
Because discipline is important. It really is.
But sometimes... the memories you can make together can teach deeper, bigger lessons.
Hang in there girl - life as a kid is tough and full of learning - but some of the BEST years you'll ever have!

Today we got to cash in on some of the summer reader rewards being offered round these parts...
And these ice cream loving fools were LOVING IT.
Laura has been keeping a reading chart this summer and if the girls hit a certain amount of time spent reading or a certain number of chapter books finished... BOOM! Rewards...
And while the girls both love to read...
Let's just say the ice cream reward isn't doing anything to slow them down - that's for sure!
And then there's this dude. He ain't reading jack...
But he does a mean Gene Simmons!
And if mommy's mini-cone is any indicator - she needs to be reading some more!
Reading rocks girls - keep it up!

"One More Flip!"
She loves doing flips under water and that's all she wanted to do as they were leaving the new pool the other day.
In her haste - she failed to realize she was standing in about 2 foot deep water.
She found out quick though - as her head met the concrete pool bottom.
Hence the big lump on her head up there...
One night of ice strapped to her head, Tylenol and a monitored sleep in Granny's room later...
And I think she learned the lesson about flipping in shallow water.
Oh... and her furry homie hung with her the whole time.
Okay Meron - don't make daddy force a helmet in the pool...
Protect ya dome, girl!

Well - it's official - our youngest turned ONE YEAR OLD today!
And Meron was determined to celebrate her best furry friend in style.
We visited the pet store for some gourmet doggie cookies...
Then Meron made her a "birthday hat necklace" while Mebski Love made her a birthday card.
Next we lit up the #1 candle and all gathered around to sing to her...
at which point I think she thought we were all certifiably nuts!
Afer all the treats and excitement died down - this one snuggled up next to her human buddy and passed out.
It's tiring being the center of attention!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY CIDER!!

This girl right here keeps me smiling!
She may be jammed in the middle - between a loud, boisterous older sister and maniacal, whining little brother - but she isn't missing.
I see you Mebbie. I see you ALL THE TIME.
I see your:
- deep thinking
- silly laughter
- big smile
- love for your family
- heart for kids
- passion for caring
- Awesome dancing
- friendly disposition
- selfless attitude
And so, so much more...
Mebski Love - don't you dare ever stop being who you are!
God made you "Mebbie" in such a wonderful way - and you wear it well!
Daddy loves you so much big girl... don't ever forget it!

I have a job that takes priority over everything else going on.
That's my job as "daddy" - and these guys right here are the very reason I do it how I do. They're the reason i get up every day and try to hustle my butt off.
Don't think that job title is as weighty as I do? Think again...
Mebbie wrote me this precious card this morning:
Translated it says:
"Daddy,ANd then - in case you thought your job wasn't important or didn't matter - check out Mebbie prayer at lunch today:
Any kid would want you. You are a star. You shine bright. I love you daddy."
"God - thank you so much for this day. I am very thankful that I have a daddy..."HAPPY FATHER'S DAY - to all the other blessed dads out there!

There's nothing I love better than a double date with my girls...
And this year's Chick-Fila-A daddy-daughter dinner date was no exception!
There is not a whole lot that will get me into a tie - but for these two?
I'd wear anything!
I don't even remotely deserve the love they so freely give me...
One of the reasons I love these dates so much - is that they give me the opportunity to start showing the girls how they should expect to be treated when they start dating..
in about 30 years.
Let's be honest - I EASILY had the two most beautiful dates on my arms at that entire event!
Inside and out.
Thanks girls - for another memory in the books!
I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!
What's important to you? Your priorities will show it - whether you believe it or not.
Or better yet - what do YOUR KIDS think is important to you? They tell it like it is and it's kinda hard to hide from the youthful truthfulness of a child!
Somehow - at my morning bible study - we got on the topic of your legacy and what your kids see as the top three most important things to us as dads.
We were challenged to ask our kids - with no leading - that simple question:
"What are the three most important things to daddy?"
I didn't want them to try to answer me how they thought I wanted to hear - so I actually had Laura ask them to write it down while i was at work.
Scary thoughts while ya wait for those results! It's a big deal - because it kinda starts to shape the legacy you'll leave behind.
I'll take it... i need to work harder at expressing how important their mommy and our family is as a whole - but I'll take it!
Meron wrote down:
2. his family
I was a little bummed that "work" made my top three - until Meron explained that what she meant was the "type of work I do at Compassion to help kids is important to me..."
And she is right... it is!
Then sweet Mebbie came with another list outta the blue...
1. i think he has a great heart
2. he has time for us
3. he has a heart for people
I will cherish these for as long as I am breathing.
I don't get it right that often - trust me.
But I am so thankful to our faithful God that He hears my prayers around being the best daddy i can be to these goofballs. I lean on Him daily to do it...
Girls - I appreciate your honesty, your hearts and your smiles and love! THANK YOU!
What do your kids think are the three most important things in their daddy's life?

I am about 93.7% sure that Meron has actually convinced Cider that she is a human...
And she has convinced herself as well - as this little ritual happens every night now!
You're spoiled rotten Cider...
And we wouldn't have it any other way!

I threw these out on Facebook the other day - but i had to preserve 'em here on the blog cuz these are some of my favorite pics of my girls... EVER.
The joy. The happiness. The love. The smiles.
I love it all.
So blessed to have these three in my life...

Dear Meron ~
Today was your day. "Meron Day" as we like to call it. The day our family grew by one - the day you entered our hearts, our minds and our lives forever.
Yeah - we go out to eat and laugh and remember you as a tiny little girl and have dessert and all kinds of fun.
But this day is so much more to me, sweetie.
See that picture up there? See how you were hanging off the front of daddy - right near my heart? Wanna know why?
Because you were keeping it beating.
See... the two people who showed up in that tiny room in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were two people with some seriously malfunctioning hearts.
Broken, I guess you could say.
Infertility had beaten us up and down and left us weary. Then... your brother Brighton went home far too early for my liking.
By the time mommy and I stumbled in to that little tiny room after a 24 hour trip - we were tired, we were scared, we were anxious and we were guarded.
But one thing we knew... one thing we NEVER doubted - was that God loved us. And He had some sort of thing up His holy sleeve for us.
So we entered that tiny room with broken, beaten down hearts - but with outstretched arms.
And God swooped in and filled those arms... with YOU!
Our hearts started beating again that day, Meron. That moment you came out, were handed to us and looked at us like:
"About time, people!"Right then - we felt His presence.
It was like a Holy defibrillator had jumped started our hearts again.
And here's the best part... IT HASN'T STOPPED SINCE!
I mean - just look at what you did to your mommy... while she was already one of the most amazing people I have ever met - you took her and elevated her so much higher.
It's been nothing short of amazing to watch.
Meron - I just came back upstairs after checking on you and your brother and sister. It's thundering and lightning and I wanted to make sure you were okay.
Little Cider was curled up beside you and you were smiling in your sleep. I couldn't help but lay down beside you, hug you and say a prayer of thanksgiving.
Because you have been one incredible gift to our family, girl.
You never even woke up!
But one day - my hope is that you'll stumble upon this 'ole blog your daddy kept and you'll get to read this stuff - this crazy life God gave us.
And in that - I hope and pray that you see the depth and magnitude of love that mommy and I have for you.
Until then Meron - you just keep doing what you're doing - being awesome, being loving, chasing God and bringing smiles to the family.
I love you more than you will ever, ever know, sweet girl... HAPPY MERON DAY!

We got to hang out with some awesome folks this weekend.
Like these two for instance. Two of the most humble, God-fearing, Jesus-chasing humans (not just kids) I have ever had the pleasure of being around...
And then there's the rest of the crew.
We've "known" each other for a while - but this was the first real solid hang out time we had.
It was all about fast friends!
Or as Z-Dogg would say... "Those are my boys!"
Thanks guys for the awesome weekend and deepened friendship!

We have some friends visiting Colorado - and ya can't have friends visit Colorado without getting high with them...
No better way than to hit some trails and climb UP!
Always watching out for mountain lions...
These guys owned it like some rock stars!
Even little Z-Dogg was a climbing champion!
The higher we got - the bigger the smiles grew!
Super happy for friends like these... you guys just being who you guys are blesses us like crazy!
