And... That's A Wrap!

Well... what do ya know...

They did it!

We officially wrapped 30 days of Whole30 tonight... and as promised - I bought these two a Hershey's Bar bigger than their heads to take on their trip!

And while I KNOW they are looking forward to some fun treats over the next 9 days of this trip... I also know they did AMAZING at this round of Whole30 and are learning all kinds of great things from strong will power - to not letting food rule the day to reading and checking labels for what we're letting in our bodies!

And that is worth it' weight in gold... or maybe in big, fat chocolate bars!

Way to kill it ladies!

T-Minus 34 Hours...

In a little less than 34 hours these three ladies will be loading up in a van to head to the airport - starting their journey to Ethiopia!

Will they get all their packing done in time???

With Laura running things... I'm going with "YES!"

The excitement has been building the past few days... and while I am insanely jealous that they get to go spend time together in the land we all love...

I am also so excited for what they're going to experience during this trip.

Shine bright, ladies... SHINE BRIGHT!

Plus One!

So - yesterday came in like a roaring lion - and next thing I know we were eating dinner, opening gifts, celebrating Laura and putting the kids to bed!

Shame on me!

So here we sit - on her "birthday plus one" and I am gonna record her birthday here forever!

So grateful that a few years ago He decided to breathe life into this gorgeous, loving, incredible human being.

I know this to be true, for sure: Without this woman... there is no me of today.

Laura... I love you more than you'll ever know!

Happy Birthday, mommy!

Tidying Up With Meron Asher

After watching about a half of an episode of Netflix's break out hit, "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo" the other day - Meron decided to tackle our junk drawer this afternoon!

Well- that and the fact that Mebbie couldn't get it open to get the scissors out!

Meron was flabbergasted and stunned!

The job definitely seemed a little overwhelming...

So she called for some back up from her trusty sister Mebbie... who was equally as stunned and flabbergasted!

But finally - with a little help from Daddy on how to just "throw it all out!" - they ended up with a super clean drawer organizer!

Thanks girls - for tackling a job too scary for the rest of us!

Hoop Dreams

He may still be one of the shorties out there on the court...

But he is LOVING it!

And his dribbling skills are on the come up!

Way to play, Z-Dogg!

Lazy Friday Night

The week caught up with all the ladies in the house tonight... as they all settled in for the last Friday night before their trip!

Meron was CONKED OUT!

Cider wasn't far behind her...

And Autumn was DONE-ZO too!

Rest easy, Ladies... REST EASY!

Even When Others Won't...

Man... there are times - most of the time really - in parenting - when you just wonder to yourself:

"Am I just totally getting this wrong? Messing it ALL up?"

And then... one of the precious little gifts He blessed ya with goes and tells ya something like this...

She said, "Daddy - we talked about heroes today and I had to get up and tell the class who my hero was..."

I asked her what she said and she told me:

"My hero is my daddy... because he stands up for what is right all the time... even when others won't..."

Whoa... what?

I'm not crying... you're crying!

I was humbled to the very core...

Every message of hate I have received over the last couple of years due to the stances and positions I have taken can take a back seat cuz none of them matter to me.

But THIS? This matters!

She thought my super hero stance - chest thrust out and arms back - was really ridiculous!

So we tried a different one - and it stuck!

Meron... you have NO idea what those words mean to me, girl.

And the fact is sweetie...

You are MY hero, big girl!

8 More Days!

You're looking at 3 of my most favorite humans on the planet.

Three ladies I would walk through fire for... they each own my entire heart!

And in 8 more days, Z-Dogg and I will pray them up and take them to the airport for their first ever "All Girls Trip" to Ethiopia!

I couldn't be any more excited for them!

We'll miss 'em, we'll be jealous of what they're experiencing and doing - but we will be grateful for the opportunity for them!

Watch out Ethiopia.... here they come!

The American Church's Complicity in Racism

Woo hoo! It is finally here... the release day for Jemar Tisby's historical book, "The Color of Compromise" that details the history behind the American Church's complicity in racism.

WHOA!!! Right?

Come on now... not the church, right?

I mean - our family has had our own share of interesting interactions with the church including clueless, unqualified leaders and black-face wearing and defending elders...

But come to find out... that wasn't an isolated thing with us at all - matter of fact the very foundation of the American Church is rooted in deep racism - and this book does an amazing job of unearthing that, unpacking it and exposing it it through factual stories from the long history of the church here.

I am imploring pastors and church leaders in influential positions to read this book and allow their hearts to be changed, their mind to be opened to a truthful historical account of the American Church and how she came to be and came to be complicit in racism in the process.

Matter of fact - I have TWO MORE FREE COPIES to give away to a pastor or influential church leader who would be willing to join me in February to read the book and discuss it in a private Facebook group.

If that's you - please reach out to me ASAP!

And if you're not a pastor or church leader with influence - but still wanna get in on this reading and discussion - pick up a copy of the book here and shoot me a message and I'll add you to the group!

Here is one of the reasons I am super passionate about exposing the church's racist foundation and finding a real way to change it...

Her future in the church matters to me - and I want to see a future that holds ALL races in high regard...

And here is reason #2 that this book was so highly anticipated by me.

This girl loves Jesus with a passion unmatched by many... and her heart for equality and justice is just as huge as her love for the Lord.

The idea that the very church she has grown to love so much here in America has a sordid past that a blind eye has been turned to is heart-breaking to say the least.

And reason #3 is dead asleep in his room - or you'd see him too!

Praying big, expectant prayers for this book and the hopeful ripples it can make in America's Church Leadership circles... because honestly...

We need a rebuild...

First To Cash It In!

I came up to my computer Saturday to find this coupon sitting on it...

See - I had given everybody in the family "coupon books" for Christmas... and it looked like Mebbie was:

Ready to cash one in!

So come Monday afternoon - the sun was out, aabreeze was picking up but it felt great - temperatures were flirting around the low 50s - and it was time to redeem the coupon!

I was certainly pretty stoked about it - and I hope she was too!

And let me tell ya - we hit the trail - danced around on some snow and ice and skirted around some mud - ran up some steep hills and just enjoyed the company and conversation!

And it was the best!

Excellent coupon choice Mebbie... MORE TO COME!

Want a REAL hug?

Z-Dogg was in the bathroom when he overheard Meron giving me a hug.

Now... we always joke about Meron giving terrible hugs - cuz she basically grabs ya in a massive bear hug and taps your back like "There, there..."

Well - Z-Dogg heard it going down and leaned out of the bathroom and said:

"Daddy - you want a REAL hug?"

If Meron is the worst hug-giver around... this dude is the polar opposite!

He gives the best hugs you could ever ask for!

He ran around and gave everybody a champion hug tonight and then ended with me!

Feeling super hugged and loved by that dude!

Never stop hugging like a champion, Zechie!!

I am so lucky to get to be the daddy to these two precious, beautiful daughters of the King.

It's no small task raising them with their beautiful brown skin in a society that has become increasingly polarized around race.

Tonight - Laura and I sat with these two and watched "The Hate U Give" together.

There were tears... there were fears... there were discussions...

Much more to come I am sure as we talk about it as a family... but right now - I'm just feeling so lucky and blessed to know their precious souls.

The reality of the world we live in these days is that it is HARD - i can't think of a better couple of girls to help me navigate it!

Late Night Cold Night Walk

It was 10:15 PM and I needed like 1300 more steps to hit my daily goal for our work wellness program...

"Hey - I know it's cold - but who wants to go for a walk with me?" I asked.

Who do you think was in her coat and shoes before the question was even done being asked?

My little daddy's girl - that's who!

We cruised down the street - around a circle - and headed back.

"Daddy - I love taking walks with you," she said.

It was super freezing and super icy... but super worth it.

Thanks for the company Meron... daddy loves you!

Growing Up!

Ya wanna know how I feel about the goofballs growing up?

Z-Dogg's face says it all!

From consistent classmate drama at school, to gossip, to mean kids, to escalated fistfight "altercations" on the playground to bigger things like racism and hate...

This growing up thing is for the birds!

Unfortunately... I can't halt it - so we gotta roll with it... and we'll do our best to try and survive it!

Grow slow, Goofballs... GROW SLOW!

Bold and Brave!

As we head into a weekend dedicated to celebrating him - I asked Mebbie what she thought about Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Bold," she said.

"And Brave."

Then I asked her if she was glad he stood for what he did...

She looked around at the rest of us - looked at me as if to say "Duh!" and said:

"Of course I am! We might not be here as a family if he didn't!"

And the girls is spot on... without the incredible, amazing work of Dr. King from years ago - our family might not be allowed to exist the way we do today!

Thankful for his boldness and bravery!

Happy 90th, Dr. King!

Had to run down and grab these two little sleepy heads before they dozed off so we could chat a bit about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

See - today he would have been 90 years old - but instead a coward took his life when he was just 39.

And man... if there was ever a time that I wish he was still with us pushing for peace and equality in the way he did - it is NOW.

We all need to remember him, his life, his work, his zeal for justice... we all need more of that.

We'll continue to celebrate him over the weekend - but we couldn't let his actual born day go by without giving him a shout out!

Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King, Jr.!

Doing What She Loves!

Every morning she hustles to get dressed for school...

She finishes her breakfast, rushes to brush her teeth, get her backpack packed and get all her stuff for the school day squared away...

All so she can have some time to head downstairs, hook up her music, pick up her microphone...

And sing her face off!

The girl absolutely LOVES to sing!

It brings her joy, it brings her happiness and it is LIFE GIVING to her!

And I love watching her do her thing!

Never stop doing what you love, girl! Never, ever!

Why We Love Her!

The girls and I were sitting in the living room watching a little "Shark Tank" when I saw this coming down the hallway...

Backwards mommy - walking backwards towards us in a hurky jerky style like the creepy girl from the "Ring" movies...

I said:

"What on earth are you doing? That's a creepy way to enter a room!"
At which point she spun around and ROARED at us...

Looking like this!

Meron literally threw the TV remote control across the room and fell off the couch...

Her fear quickly turned to laughter as she chocked out between cracking up spells:
"That was the scariest thing I have ever seen!"
And I might just have to agree with her!

Laura is crazy as the day is long... but it's just one of the bazillion reasons that...

We love her so much!

Reppin' the Dirty Dirty

This dude was begging to rock my ATL fitted...

Me thinks he rocked it pretty darn well, too!

He also rocks "CRAZY" well too!

"What you really know about the Dirty South...?

Man of Many Faces

He had finished eating before me and slowly slid out of his seat at the table to stand beside me...

He was giving me these oddball side glances... when all of a sudden...

Words don't even really describe the goofiness of this little dude... so I didn't even try tonight!

Stay goofy, Z-Dogg... stay goofy!
