Bold and Brave!

As we head into a weekend dedicated to celebrating him - I asked Mebbie what she thought about Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Bold," she said.

"And Brave."

Then I asked her if she was glad he stood for what he did...

She looked around at the rest of us - looked at me as if to say "Duh!" and said:

"Of course I am! We might not be here as a family if he didn't!"

And the girls is spot on... without the incredible, amazing work of Dr. King from years ago - our family might not be allowed to exist the way we do today!

Thankful for his boldness and bravery!

Happy 90th, Dr. King!

Had to run down and grab these two little sleepy heads before they dozed off so we could chat a bit about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

See - today he would have been 90 years old - but instead a coward took his life when he was just 39.

And man... if there was ever a time that I wish he was still with us pushing for peace and equality in the way he did - it is NOW.

We all need to remember him, his life, his work, his zeal for justice... we all need more of that.

We'll continue to celebrate him over the weekend - but we couldn't let his actual born day go by without giving him a shout out!

Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King, Jr.!

Doing What She Loves!

Every morning she hustles to get dressed for school...

She finishes her breakfast, rushes to brush her teeth, get her backpack packed and get all her stuff for the school day squared away...

All so she can have some time to head downstairs, hook up her music, pick up her microphone...

And sing her face off!

The girl absolutely LOVES to sing!

It brings her joy, it brings her happiness and it is LIFE GIVING to her!

And I love watching her do her thing!

Never stop doing what you love, girl! Never, ever!

Why We Love Her!

The girls and I were sitting in the living room watching a little "Shark Tank" when I saw this coming down the hallway...

Backwards mommy - walking backwards towards us in a hurky jerky style like the creepy girl from the "Ring" movies...

I said:

"What on earth are you doing? That's a creepy way to enter a room!"
At which point she spun around and ROARED at us...

Looking like this!

Meron literally threw the TV remote control across the room and fell off the couch...

Her fear quickly turned to laughter as she chocked out between cracking up spells:
"That was the scariest thing I have ever seen!"
And I might just have to agree with her!

Laura is crazy as the day is long... but it's just one of the bazillion reasons that...

We love her so much!

Reppin' the Dirty Dirty

This dude was begging to rock my ATL fitted...

Me thinks he rocked it pretty darn well, too!

He also rocks "CRAZY" well too!

"What you really know about the Dirty South...?

Man of Many Faces

He had finished eating before me and slowly slid out of his seat at the table to stand beside me...

He was giving me these oddball side glances... when all of a sudden...

THIS WENT DOWN...

Words don't even really describe the goofiness of this little dude... so I didn't even try tonight!

Stay goofy, Z-Dogg... stay goofy!

Rolling in the Honor

Man... the second part of the school year started yesterday - and today these goofballs got to bring home their report cards...

And I couldn't be more proud of these two gifts from God who came home repping a certificate for their inclusion on

GOLD HONOR ROLL!

That means all As for the last quarter!

You're hearing from one proud daddy right here!

Mebbie has been so consistently amazing in juggling her workload with her sports and her other activities...

And she did it again!

Loving people, loving her friends and classmates, loving her teachers and administration - and always being the empathetic girls she has proven to be time and time again!

SO PROUD OF HER!

And then there's this girl here...

The beginning of this year had been so challenging for her - made even more so by an adult in her learning environment who was breaking her spirit daily and stealing her joy.

Her grades showed it the first report of the year and her personality was even being affected - but THIS TIME!?

The joy coming out of her as she excitedly showed me she made "GOLD HONOR ROLL, DADDY!" was so real!

Some of this stuff doesn't come easy for this precious baby girl of mine - and I know how hard she had to work to get her grades up... and I couldn't be any more proud of her tonight.

And that broken relationship issue at school? It's been resolved and already - IN JUST TWO DAYS - we're seeing the old Meron back - tthe one excited about learning and organizing and being part of the class.

Praise God for that.

Girls - YOU DID IT - and Daddy is SO PROUD!

My Posse of Bright Lights

I was kinda sad this morning as my posse had to head back to school after something like 19 days off!

Gone are the late night movie binges, the sleeping in and the lazy attitude about everything!

But it was cool to see them kinda excited about heading back in this morning - and always great to hear our daily pre-school call and response of:

I yell out "Go be a bright light for...?"

"JESUS!" they all yell!

And then I scream, "But what's the time?"

And they respond with a resounding "It's time to get ill!"

And with that... we know all will be well for the day!

Stay BRIGHT and ILL little homies... and you can't lose!

The Last Night

It was the last night before heading back to school for second semester.

"Daddy... can we build a circle of pillows and camp out on the living room floor tonight?"

Last night before the late night parties are over?

WHY NOT?! Go for it!

Gonna miss the loosey goosey laid back approach we've had the past few weeks - but welcoming the schedule and structure!

Happy "First Day Back," guys!

All Skate!

All this girl wanted for Christmas - all she wrote on her "note to Santa" - was that she wanted to go ice skating with her family!

Well guess what....?

That's exactly what we did!

After church on Sunday - we piled in the van and headed to one of the local ice rinks to get our skate on!

And man... everybody did pretty darn good!

This little dude was all over the place!

And Meron may have been the Wobble-Queen... but she stayed upright almost the entire time!

And then there was Mebbie!

She was beaming from ear to ear the entire time... loving time with her family on the ice!

Mebbie... thank you for sharing your awesome Christmas gift with your family... WE LOVED IT!

We'll be back ice... WE'LL BE BACK!

Done-Zo

This dude right here can shut down in a SPLIT SECOND!

It doesn't matter the place or the position.

He is able to just konk out...

JUST LIKE THAT!

This time he had a partner in crime - able to get her snooze on equally as fast!

Sleep it off, homies... sleep it off!

Chains

So... Meron cruised into winter break with a goal of doing some catch up reading so she would be on point with the rest of her class as she moves in to a new classroom for second semester.

Well... we all decided to help support her as she caught up on her reading of "Chains" by Laurie Halse Anderson.

But what started out as her family having her back - has turned in to something much bigger...

We are ALL loving this book!

So pretty much every night we all gather around and I read a few chapters out loud to the whole family.

SIDEBAR:
Yes, I am rocking basketball shorts, compression pants and a winter hat with a ball on it. Don't judge! It's my "post workout outfit" and I am in it like 90% of the time.

As I am reading it - Meron has been following along and has spent some time reading a few chapters herself with her sister...

And speaking of her sister - Mebbie is WAY in to this book too - and has been following along the whole time as well!

Hear me... this is NOT easy, fun, cute, lovable historical fiction to read.

But this book is a must read in this current climate we're living in today in this country.

It's a peek into the way racism and slavery were RAMPANT and FOUNDATIONAL in the construction of "America the Beautiful."

And while it hits super close for our crew based on the way God chose to build our family - I think it's a great read for ANYBODY and can certainly give some historical understanding behind how we got where we are!

Way to go goofballs - for having a mind that wants to learn and know and understand...

Read on, Camp Hoffman... READ ON!

Daddy's Little Girl

Goodness gracious this girl right here... she is growing up so fast...

And I love her so much!

Laura and the goofballs came to Compassion to have lunch with me today - and as I was walking out to the van - I was about 30 yards away when the side door flew open and out jumps meron...

Lunchbox swinging in her hand she was sprinting towards me as fast as she could - huge smile on her face.

Laura told me she said: "There's daddy... I'm going to him..." and she bolted.

That vision of her just running to me stuck with me all day.

Reminded me of toddler Meron wobbling all over but headed towards Daddy.

This girl has always been a "Daddy's Girl" and will be my little baby for as long as we're kicking!

She brings me joy, happiness, love and so much laughter!

Meron - you are FOREVER my little girl!

Gangsta Lean

Missing this little crazy dude tonight!

Zechie and I are committed to finding some other creative outlet that we can be silly together with when it's not "elf season."

But in the meantime...

Get your lean on, Z-Dogg!

Z-Dogg got some Black Panther jammies for Christmas and dude was STOKED!

I told him to give me his best Black Panther look - and he didn't disappoint!

Dear 2019...

I love the beginning of a new year.

It's like a welcoming pat on the back after you made it through the last 365 days intact and still breathing.

It's like a blank slate... a clean sheet of paper set out before ya - waiting for you to conquer it.

I love the invitation to come do ANYTHING!

And I don't really do officially declared resolutions... I mean we eat pretty well - been exercising our faces off as a family - are pushing hard ahead with Brighton Their World... so all the standard go to resolutions I feel like we're hitting.

But that doesn't mean we don't have dreams or goals or things we'd love to toss out at that blank slate of a new year...

Like Z-Dogg for instance!

He watched the entire Rocky series of movies all the way through Creed II this year with us... and now he is dead set on building some big muscles in 2019!

Rock on, Z-Dogg!

We're rooting for ya and can't wait to see your big muscles!

And then there's Mebski Love!

a Her new found love for the sport of basketball is high on her priority list... and she wants to perfect her crossover dribble and her between the legs move.

You got this Mebbie!

And we can't forget the Meronator!

This beautiful girl is chasing down her love of singing and plans on taking some lessons and just keep belting it out to get more comfortable with a mic in her hand.

Sing on Meron - your voice is BEAUTIFUL!

And okay... there's me.

Just because I don't declare resolutions - doesn't mean I don't have some goals for the new year.

Several involve writing projects and taking them to completion.

I'd like to run the NYC Marathon.

I'd love to take a photography class.

I'd like to be a better husband and better daddy.

I'd certainly love to find myself more in the middle of God's will for me and to realize it in the moment.

And so many more...

But here's the deal goofballs (and Tymm... mostly Tymm really)... these goals are awesome - but hear me on this...

If you don't resolve to conquer them all - or even anything you set out to do in 2019 - but you maintain a heart for Him - a spirit of empathy and compassion - a bold and courageous faith that fights for justice and equality... if you do everything you do to honor Him and bring Him glory with your words and your actions...

If you do that and accomplish NONE of your goals...

You are still a champion of royal lineage made in His image!

So go after your goals strong and with dedication, desire and perseverance...

but never ever forget why we're chasing them and who we're chasing them for.

Let's do this 2019... you and us... let's shine!
