Everest Leader

Not a Sherpa up the famous mountain... but rather a leader at our church's VBS program this year... called "Everest!"

So proud of how involved this girl has been at church... her leadership skills are getting so many chances to grow and shine!

You honor Him well, Meron!

Reading Camp

He may be flexing those Z-Dogg muscles... but this week our little homie has spent every morning at...

READING CAMP!

Flexing his mind... getting smarter... and locking down those reading skills!

Way to flex the mental muscles, Zechie!

She Loves the Crazy Man

This girl here - she's my road dawg - the world's biggest "daddy's girl" and her love for me is relentless.

I feel it every day.

She showers me with grace, love, forgiveness, goofiness, fun, humor... I could go on and on and on.

And I don't deserve ANY of it... but good grief I am grateful for it!

Meron - you're love is overwhelming... thank you!

Full On Retriever

Usually the blog has a pic of at least one of the goofballs every time - it's kinda been my rule.

But honestly - this girl is the GOOFIEST of the balls - and Meron insisted she get some air time.

The girl is true to her breed - no doubt - full on Golden Retriever - she will sit on the couch like that for HOURS.

Stay goofy, Cider... STAY GOOFY!

I love this pic right here!

I think "Goofy Hoffman girls" would get it too!

Never stop laughing, ladies!

Thanks For Being A Good Human!

Man... tonight we got to hang out with our friend Jesse... a dude we haven't seen for like 14 years or something crazy like that!

And ya know what....?

Nothing has changed!

We fell right back in line like we hadn't missed a day!

We took him to show him some of the coolness of Colorado (until lightning started freaking us out a bit)... and then we went and broke bread and just hung out.

As we were leaving, I felt compelled to say to him:

"Thanks, Jesse, for being a good human..."

Isn't that sad? That we have to thank the good humans when we come into contact with them... but we do... cu they're RARE!

But he is definitely one of them and we're grateful for who he is!

And we're committed to not letting 14 years go by again!

Come back soon, Jesse!

Sunday Family Tradition

Thanks to Laura's super frugality super hero powers - we now have a new Sunday Meal Tradition we've been enjoying the past few weeks!

Modern Market is "kids eat free" on Sunday - and we take FULL ON advantage of it!

We almost can't buy the groceries for what we eat a GREAT meal for there on Sundays!

Admittedly - I wasn't keen on this place at first...

I had only been once - and the circumstances and the company were less than stellar...

The kids convinced me to try it again - with MUCH BETTER company and conversation!

And they were right - it is AWESOME!

Delicious, affordable meals made from clean, fresh and whole foods with next to no preservatives...

YES PLEASE!

So there ya have it - for those who think I only post online about race relations and the desperate situation of our society...

Here's a bunch of pictures of our food to prove ya wrong!

Find yourself in our 'hood on a Sunday evening...

you BETTER come join us and break some bread!

Key Lime Busted!

Meron whipped us up a delicious key lime pie recently - a favorite in this household!

And here she was - caught giving it a whirl after the pie was cooling and setting!

You deserved it, girl!

Thanks - Meron - for the deliciousness!

They're All Gonna Laugh At You...

I am not sure how we landed there - but after dinner tonight we found ourselves spending 90+ minutes looking up Adam Sandler YouTube clips and showing them to the kids!

And it was the best thing EVER!

The kids loved it - especially when we shared that we played an Adam Sandler song at our wedding!

And don't freak out - we censored things where we needed to... but it was time the goofball crew got to know some good old fashioned Sandler!

I am a GIGANTIC Adam Sandler fan... have been forever.

When we moved - I got rid of almost all of my CDs - but I kept some that were near and dear to my heart... including these!

And this guy here...

Man we may be in trouble... cuz he GOT IT!

He was cracking up so hard at him - and my daddy heart couldn't have been any more proud!

"Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it..."

Shake It Up For Half Price

What do you do when it's half price milkshake night after 8:00 PM at Sonic?

You head to Sonic, that's what!

Meron quickly took control and placed orders for everybody!

And looked mighty cute doing it too!

Soon enough - Mebbie was sipping on a milkshake...

And Z-Dogg was siphoning down a slushy!

Good times with the goofball crew!

Rocky Mountain Vibes

Some friends from Georgia happened to be enjoying an extended little stay in Colorado Springs... and tonight we finally connected to hang out for a bit!

What an awesome group of kids!

And it was a beautiful night to catch a Rocky Mountain Vibes game - the new minor league baseball team in town!

We became quick fans!

And it was smiles...

all around!

These two here became FAST FRIENDS!

And Meron was absolutely smitten with this little dude!

Thanks guys for a fun night with cool people!

Play ball!

My Little Baller

I love how much this girl has fallen in love with the sport of basketball!

She regularly comes to the Y with us to just hit open gym while we work out.

Can't wait for the next season to kick off!

Keep hustlin' Mebbie!

Getting To Great

Man... I love everything about this picture we snapped at dusk near the Washington Monument last month.

It just represents so much!

A list of fierce fighters who passionately stood for equality and justice...

A monument rising towards the sky - an indicator of what we could be...

And a little dude who is passionate about the future and where we can go!

People are gonna try to stop you Z-Dogg.

They'll mock you, call you "crazy" and tell you you're "wrong."

At times you might even question yourself...

But never stop getting behind what is RIGHT!

The Best of Time Doing Nothing!

I hardly ever get long weekends - they seem to be reserved for trips to Ethiopia most of the time...

But with the 4th falling on Thursday - I took PTO on Friday and turned it into a super long weekend - a weekend of us hanging out, seeing a couple movies, eating out a few times and just BEING TOGETHER with this crazy crew!

And we LOVED it!

This crew here... they keep me young... or crazy... or BOTH!

While I'm not looking forward to getting back to the grind tomorrow - I'll cherish the time spent with my goofball crew this weekend!

Thanks guys for wanting to hang with your old daddy all weekend!

Acknowledge

I got a lot of things bouncing around in my head lately... sad things, angry things, hurtful things, glad things, happy things...

All competing for space.

Truthfully - we as a country don't feel all that removed from a time like the picture above depicts.

That's heartbreaking.

And I've got people in my world - those close to me - those not close to me - that have surprised me around the current climate of our society.

Some good surprises... some not so good surprises.

Humanity has me twisted.

I saw this quote on the wall in Washington, D.C. during our trip there earlier this summer - and it led me to choose my word for the rest of the year...

Acknowledge.

So many people wanna turn a blind eye to our past - to the very foundation upon which our country was built and continues to operate.

And not an ignorant, innocent turning of their eyes - but a willful shunning of the past - because that past is dark, it is scary, it is oppressive, it is hard... and it is true.

But like this quote says - how the heck can we know where we are heading - know what we need to fix, correct, address, change, grow to get there... if we refuse to see where we are coming from?

How do we do that?

We don't... that's how.

Forward progression always relies on knowing where we were and building on it.

Every time I drive... every day - I spend a good amount of time looking in the rear view mirror. It keeps things behind me from running me off the road.

And even though some would rather not address or acknowledge the past... I am gonna.

And here are three of the main reason why!!

These guys deserve a much better future - a much better world - and we CAN get there - but we have to learn and grow from our past - and to do that we have to acknowledge that past so we don't repeat it and instead - defeat it.

It's painful... but it's for the better.

Let's acknowledge so we can grow!

Head Gear

As a hat dude myself - I was stoked when Z-Dogg came out rocking the sideways ball cap tonight!

I mean - the kid is super cute and would look adorable rocking a doily on his head...

But he was KILLING this look!

He told me he searched and searched for a Yankees hat but couldn't find one... I know what's getting bought soon!

Stay dope, Zechie... STAY DOPE!

What to the Slave Is The Fourth of July?

On July 5, 1852 - one of America's greatest orators gave a speech that explored the constitutional and values-based arguments against the Slave trade within the United States.

Given the day after Independence Day - Frederick Douglass suggested that positive statements about American values, such as liberty, citizenship, and freedom, were an offense to the enslaved people of the United States because of their lack of freedom, liberty, and citizenship.

Douglass compares the treatment of slaves to that of American colonists under British rule and urges them to help the slaves like they helped themselves when breaking free.

"To drag a man in fetters into the grand illuminated temple of liberty, and call upon him to join you in joyous anthems, were inhuman mockery and sacrilegious irony."
His speech was an example of the "paradox of the positive" because it highlights how something positive and meant to be positive can also exclude individuals.

It's definitely worth reading in its entirety right here.

As a family - we LOVE understanding, acknowledging and celebrating history.

And we're big on birthdays too...

So today - we wish "Happy Birthday" to America... and as we close our eyes to blow out candles on her cake - we make a wish that ALL Americans will begin to acknowledge the FULL history of our country - the good AND the bad... so that we can build, grow and one day become the great nation we are capable of!

Let's be the country we can be...

Start 'Em Young

This smiling little dude had his entire week made when his friends at the YMCA let him come behind the counter and "help out" a bit!

He was so stoked!

I told him... next up - we talk about him helping out with mortgage payments!

He wasn't having it...

Ya look good back there, Z-Dogg!

Lucky Little Dude

One day - this guy will look back and realize just how much of a lucky little dude he was...

Because he has a big sister who loves him well!

And while sometimes he drives her wacko by just being a 7 year old boy...

He definitely lets her know how much he loves her too!

Thank you, Mebbie - for loving the Z-Dogg like you do!
