Birth Mother's Day

It's never lost on me - that somewhere out there - 3 birth mothers made unimaginably hard decisions that led to me being the daddy of these three beautiful image bearers.

Tonight - the day before we celebrate the amazing moms on this earth - we celebrate the ones who birthed them and loved them enough to make a sacrifice I can't imagine.

For years - through some tears - we prayed and we prayed,
Then we got to change diapers because of a choice that you made,

A choice I can't fathom - one my mind can't imagine,
But I believe it was born out of love and compassion;

And you made it - and through it you made me a daddy,
And I took your sacrifice and I loved it - like madly!

But I never lost sight of the loss that you suffered,
So that I could be father and Laura could be mother;

I think of you often - when milestones happen,
When the kids are on stage and the parents are clapping;

When times tables are learned and when grades are completed,
Or when boo-boos pop up and mommy hugs are needed;

Things like learning to read and to write and to talk,
Or rolling from belly and learning to walk;

All the questions that rise, the yes, no's and maybe's,
And the ones about you - and about tummy babies;

Questions about family and the colors of skin,
It's so hard not to feel all the loss in this win;

No this awesome, incredible thing called "my life,"
Is born from a place full of pain, hurt and strife;

And I never forget that my advances and chances,
Came to life while yours died through dire circumstances;

So on the eve of the day that we celebrate mothers,
I say a prayer and remember that there is... another.

Never, ever forgotten... thank you.
