Words Matter...

They do. So so much... ya know?

When we are confronted with hard things... awkward things... humbling, embarrassing things... if we chose to just hit them head on, acknowledge them and try to work through them...

... we wouldn't find ourselves in weird positions of having to offer up public apologies because we tried to soften the blow or use a word or words that made us feel more comfortable, safe and secure in our place of white supremacy.

You can't swap "privilege" for "blessing" and think it's okay. Good grief... I mean we've already completely bastardized the word "blessing" in this country - lets not muddy the waters even more.

White american pastors - stop kowtowing to the comfort and safety of your white congregations and call it like it is. Say it with me...

There... wasn't so bad, was it? You survived. I mean - half your racist congregation walked out on ya - but now you're working with people who wanna make change! Yay!

Oh yeah - daily reminder for ya:

Real talk...

Keep speaking out on it!

Change is super tough... isn't it Z-Dogg?

I mean - changing the way you toss your shoes in the middle of the living room floor has been darn near impossible...

Now just think about making changes in something as steeped in racist tradition as the white american church!

White supremacy in the church is too deeply embedded to just roll over... so the way I see it - churches right now are gonna lose people.

You're gonna lose people due to the uncomfortable awkwardness of your silence in the face of racism.

Or you're gonna lose people due to the uncomfortable conviction of your truth in the face of racism.

Heads or tails... which way you leaning, Pastor?

Oh yeah - while you're here - don't forget to remember:

A truth worth repeating!

Ice Cream, Shadow and Sunsets

Z-Dogg soaking in a summer night - ice cream sandwich in hand - sunset as his back drop!

Quarantine summer ain't ALL terrible!

Oh yeah... while you're here checking out the cute kid pics - just a quick reminder so ya don't forget that:

Always and forever!

Tap Tap Taparoo

Man... we've been feeling bad for the kids (all - not just ours) during this summer of quarantine...

During a time when they'd typically be making memories hanging with friends and being goofy - instead they've been stuck with us... TRYING to come up with new tings to do to not go crazy!

So tonight - we loaded up the whole crew - and went to channel our best socially distanced and quarantine safe inner Happy Gilmores at the Putt Putt course!

These guys had a blast - we all stayed clean, safe and healthy - and we'll be back for sure!

Oh yeah... and while you're here - remember...

Don't forget it!

State of Emergency

We're in one here in America... no matter which way ya look at it...

Things seem pretty dire these days.

But on the other hand - something feels different.

I've been yelling in this space of equality, racism and justice for damn near a decade... and it feels super good to have people awakening and arising to the cause.

I dunno why my creative friend - Atlanta recording artist Jahah - asked me to direct a video for his most recent song, "State of Emergency" - but he did. And I was scared.

I prayed. I watched some hard videos... a lot actually. I cried. I lamented. I prayed some more. And I edited.

And we ended up here.

Please take 4 minutes to give this incredible song a listen along with the visuals.

I don't think you'll regret it.

I really think Jahah captured a moment in time... perfectly.

It's sorrowful, it's real, it's raw... but in it he displays the hope he always has.

I am so grateful to have been invited in to this. It was humbling, therapeutic, educational and eye-opening.

I'm a better person for having crossed paths with Jahah... check out his song "State of Emergency" and see his heart... and you'll be better too.

If you dig it and would be willing to share it - here are some links:

She's a Hustler!

Man... I am really enjoying working out with this girl right here!

Almost nightly we are hitting the fields for her like 3rd or 4th workout of the day!

She is seeing all kinds of advances and improvements...

Because she is putting in the real work!

Meron - know this - whatever volleyball season brings for you in the fall... DADDY IS SUPER PROUD OF YOU!

Way to kill it, Meron!

I Pray for the Police

Oh trust me... I pray for the police.

Probably way more than YOU do.

Ya know why?

Cuz that is my son up there.

A brown young man growing up in white america.

So don't come at me with "blue lives matter" and crap about praying for them... cuz believe me... I pray for them.

I need any cop confronting that little dude up there to be SMOTHERED in prayer.

So yeah... I pray for the police...

Sunsets and Fish

We hit up one of our new favorite spots last night to get a quick walk in and catch a gorgeous sunset at the same time!

We bumped in to one of our friends - a beautiful soul also from Ethiopia!

She was there fishing with her son and allowed our goofballs to jump right in with them!

She gave Z-Dogg a quick lesson and dude is HOOKED...

And then... go figure... look who goes and catches one!

Meron was addicted too!

Looks like I'll be buying some rods this week cuz apparently we are fishermen now...

Teach a man to fish...

A Girl and Her Dog...

This girl here...

She LOVES her dogs!

Honestly - the whole crew does!

And the quarantine has brought them all even closer as they hit the trails almost every single day now!

Dogs make quarantining a little bit easier...

The Gifts They Are To Me

These four beautiful faces right here... they made me a daddy.

And what an amazing, incredible, undeserved gift from God they are to me!

They made me feel so loved today - from the moment I woke up to breakfast made, coffee in the cup, Old School Hip Hop station on Pandora and homemade cards and fun gifts for me - until right now - moments before bed.

They did nothing but love me.

At dinner - they went around the table and said what they love about me. It was hard for me to keep it together.

Meron said:

"you’re super cool - not one of those weird dads..."

Mebbie said:

"I feel so safe with you - like you’d fight every battle with me."

And Z-Dogg said:

"you’re really funny and you make me laugh all the time!"

Guys... YOU are the awesome ones and getting to parent you has been the single most biggest blessing of my entire life.

I would lay down my life for each one of you and do anything to protect you and lead you towards Him and the plan He has for you.

Grateful beyond words.

Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there...

If quarantine has done anything right - it's made this guy an adventurer!

We're talking daily hikes all over the place to check out the beauty of this amazing state we live in!

And it's not hard to social distance while doing that!!

And every now and then - ya might find yourself wedged between two rocks - stuck on the edge of insanity!

Luckily ya have a sister like Mebbie who came to the rescue!

Never stop adventuring, Z-Dogg!

Rock On!

Mebbie... on... a... rock.

Rock On!

Putting In Work!

I am so super proud of this girl!

Her volleyball coach sent workouts for the squad to do through the summer - and she has been going above and beyond!

She gets up early and does two online ab workouts she found... then she does a leg workout...

And then in the evening - she goes to the field to do the workout from her coach.

She loves the sport and only wants to get better...

All the effort is gonna pay off girl!

Hustle, hustle, hustle!

What Else Ya Got...?

Man, 2020... you done went crazy on us, didn't ya?

Got me over here - all twisted like this... like:

What ya got next, huh 2020?

Bring it... cuz we think we can handle it!

Half of 2020 is officially behind us...

Bring on 2021!

Freaky Freddy Fingers

This kid here and his imagination!

He can have fun and be creative with just about anything!

Like his "Freddy Krueger" claws he made outta paper (he has no idea who Freddy is!)...

Luckily he doesn't have a striped sweater, a Fedora and access to a boiler room... and he's not a psychopath either!

Never stop imagining, Z-Dogg!

Be Brave, Be Strong, Be Kind!

It's been a tumultuous couple weeks 'round this country - and we're wide open about things around here so our kids have been feeling the anxiety and exhaustion too.

And this week - at the perfect time - the kids all three got packages in the mail with these awesome t-shirts in there for them!

Some super loving and caring friends back in ATL were checking in on them - knowing all the racial tension on the rise - they just wanted to make sure they were doing okay!

And we LOVE them for that!

They also sent each of the goofballs a hand-made card with incredible words of affirmation inside.

Guys... you encouraged, inspired and strengthened us ALL with your incredible kindness.

Thanks for modeling how to love your neighbors - even when they're 1,000+ miles away!

We appreciate you!

Meron Day #12

There she was - 12 years ago - cradled in a terrified dude's arms while he tried to play it cool like he knew what he was doing!

Today was Meron Day #12!

What's Meron day, ya ask?

Oh - just the day this precious bundle of love, joy and infectious spirit of God came into our family... and we celebrate those days HARD!

I loved just being around this girl all day today...

She was a game changer in the Camp Hoffman Circus... for sure!

We sat around dinner (her choice of course) and we all shared the things we love about Meron... we do that for each of their "days."

And it was BEAUTIFUL.

This girl is my fierce defender... she doesn't allow ANYBODY to come at me sideways - she has my back unconditionally.

I love her more than I can even put in to words and I am so grateful for the beautiful life He gave her.

Happy Meron Day, sweet girl... you are loved beyond measure!

Not A Chance

You probably thought I wouldn't see that thing - didn't ya?

That super racist thing you posted full of overt, covert, blatant and micro-aggressive racism.

But I did.

And then you even got called out by people in your weird, little circle...

And I saw that too.

But you doubled down on it... with "It's my opinion" and things like "It's still a free country" and "I'm not racist."

Awww. Bless you're sweet little heart...

but yes, you are racist.

And then you threw yourself a little pity party with your little pity party friends.

It was getting tough to watch... but I saw that too.

I watch that stuff because the closet racists are everywhere around us - and they will NEVER, EVER, EVER be allowed to be in proximity to my children.

So hear me... as long as you're out there espousing racist beliefs - be they covert or overt - you will not be near my kids. As long as you're promoting racial microaggressions and creating platforms for your subtly racist friends to raise you up... NOPE.

You'll never have the ears, mind, body or spirit of my kids to influence.

These boundaries are in place for a reason - and have been for years.

And also... my kids are wise and in the know... they're not interested.

Why Speak Up?

I'm seeing people grow weary of the call for white voices to speak to white people and declare the truth... and it saddens me.

I am seeing people we kinda KNEW had dark hearts in this space - solidly confirm it - and realizing they will NEVER EVER EVER be allowed around our kids.

And I'm seeing people who we THOUGHT would go to bat for our children - and our brothers and sisters who share the same skin colors as them - instead choose silence or even choose to push against speaking up... and they're opening our eyes to who we have to be cautious about around our kids.

And it all saddens me.

You might - right now - be parenting the next Wells Fargo residential home loan manager who will hold power over the interest rate Mebbie's daughter will get on her first mortgage.

What values are you instilling in them about black lives in banking?

+ + + +

You might hold influence over the next OB/GYN who will be delivering Meron's third daughter in the hospital during an emergency c-section.

What is your silence telling them about black lives in the medical space?

+ + + +

You could very well be raising the next Chief of Police in a town where Zechariah's son LOVES to play pick up basketball at dusk.

What is your stance and posture RIGHT NOW teaching that future chief about respect and honor of black lives in our legal system?

+ + + +

Look... white people... the call to a collective loud voice was never about guilt. I mean - chill with the fragility - it was never even about YOU.

It was about a cohesive, collective call to our white brothers and sisters to ACKNOWLEDGE the inequality and injustice - and to fight to fix it.

That's it.

Let go of your feelings for a second - stop feeling personally guilty - and make a little noise in your circles of influence.

You'll never know who's life you may change down the road.

Chip Off The Block...

Two of my favorite humans right here!

And Meron is growing up WAY TOO fast... but boy does she embody equal parts Laura and equal parts me.

She's definitely our girl!

Slow down the grow up, Meron!

Quarantine With A View

We're still quarantining pretty hard and doing our best to practice as much social distancing as we can...

We're just lucky to get to do it with some ridiculous view and serious socially safe distance!

Thanks for the beauty, Colorado!

Raising a Voice

It feels good to have an outlet for your voice and feelings and heart.

I mean... when the world around you is swirling and you're watching people you know that supposedly love you stay silent and people who look like you are being hurt and murdered at an insane rate and the country feels like it's spiraling outta control...

It feels good to raise your voice and stand for something.

These girls are so willing to be involved... and I love it cuz they are the generation that is going to be pivotal in pushing the change.

This lady here... she got it.

Her sign brought tears to my eyes... cuz that's all we want... and it's what we need!

Parents brave enough to institute a generational change in their family.

Bravo, lady... BRAVO.

To my brave, bold girls... you're making a difference.

The world is watching... the legacy you're leaving already will be remembered.

You're making a difference.

And daddy is SUPER proud of you!

Sister Hikers

I love how much these two beautiful brown lives that MATTER love each other...

They've been putting in some SERIOUS quarantine hiking, for sure!

And they always do it with huge smiles on their faces!

Grateful for their beautiful, beautiful lives!
